Macappella 2019

Desperate to sing after a 3 week break following our sell-out Fringe Shows, 25 Chorus members journeyed to Perth to join 50 other barbershop singers from across Scotland for Macappella 2019. This was the second year of Macappella and we are grateful to BABS for their financial and musical support. We enjoyed a great day, singing a beautiful Steve Armstrong arrangement of ‘She’s like the Swallow’ and we were expertly coached by Tim Briggs and Andy Allen from Hallmark of Harmony. Here’s to Macappella 2020!

Can’t Beat a Retreat !

“High up where the air is rare, wild horses ride.  It’s beautiful, let’s go over the Wild Mountainside.”

40 members of the Chorus enjoyed a weekend retreat in the sunshine on 11/12 May at Lundin Links in Fife, preparing for our Fringe Shows in August.  On Saturday, we enjoyed inspiring coaching from our Musical Director Rosalind Johnson, and Performance Coach Norma Ferrier.  We then had the chance to try out some of our Fringe songs for a local audience, before a meal at the Old Manor Hotel and some fine harmonising in the Afterglow.  As is to be expected, the pace on Sunday was a little gentler, but we all left invigorated and full of enthusiasm.  Can’t wait for August!

Supporting the Inner Wheel

On Friday 14 April, 21 members of the Chorus, led by our Chorus Director Rosalind Johnson, travelled up to Auchterarder in Perthshire to perform for the Inner Wheel’s Charity Event in aid of Stroke Clubs and Jessie’s Fund.

160 members and friends of the Inner Wheel were entertained by songs ranging from “When I’m Sixty Four” to “Seven Bridges Road”, including the Proclaimers’ “500 miles” and the Chorus’s Scottish Anthem “My Homeland”, both of which will feature in our forthcoming Edinburgh Fringe Show in August entitled “Distilled In Scotland – 100% Harmony”

Organiser Evelyn Gilmour praised the group saying, “Thank you very much for coming and entertaining us so well with your beautiful harmonies. Everyone was praising your performance, so hopefully they will spread the word about your Fringe appearance”.

Coaching with David Sangster

9th April 2019
Oh what a special rehearsal night, tonight in Edinburgh with Guest Chorus Coach and Arranger David Sangster. David helped us put the ‘WOW’ factor into his own arrangement of ‘Wild Mountain Thyme / Wild Mountainside’ – just one of the songs in our forthcoming Fringe Show, ‘Distilled In Scotland – 100% Harmony’.

Make Music Day

We are delighted to announce that the Rolling Hills Chorus will be kicking off the “Make Music Day” Summer Solstice celebrations at Edinburgh’s Central Music Library, on Friday 21st June.  We’ll be starting the festivities at 12 noon, mid-day on midsummer’s day!  For more on the day’s events –  see the Make Music Day website.

Coaching with Sean Bui

On Saturday, 23rd February, the Chorus enjoyed a great day’s coaching from Sean Bui, Director of The Royal Harmonics and The Knights of Harmony.  We worked on two Scottish songs, The Skye Boat Song and My Homeland, both of which will figure in our Fringe Show in August.  Everyone had a fantastic time, learned a lot and we were thrilled to see so many of our new members from the Learn to Sing in Harmony Course join us for the day.

Graduation Day

The final night of our six week ‘Learn to Sing in Harmony’ Course took place on Tuesday, 19th February with 20 men being awarded their Certificate of Completion.

The Course ended with a superb rendition of ‘(I’m Gonna be) 500 Miles’ by a 54 man Chorus – a great sound! As a reward for all of their hard work the Chorus is hosting a Social Night next Tuesday 26th February at the Corstorphine Bowling Club, Edinburgh.

Rolling Hills at the 2017 Fringe

30th August 2017

What can we say? An encore on the first night, a standing ovation and encore on the second night and packed to the gunnels on our final night. Thank you so much to the audience at our three shows in the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe.

The title of the show was Monks to Boybands, the Harmony Hall of Fame. We went on a one thousand year journey starting with the plainchant of the mediaeval monasteries, passing through Renaissance counterpoint, Music Hall, Doo Wop, Rock and Pop and ending bang up to date in the current a cappella phenomenon.

The men of the Rolling Hills Chorus had a blast. We can’t wait to entertain you again next time.
